KUCHING: More than 500 people, including many chidren, are going without food for 30 hours here this weekend to raise funds for charity and to create awareness on poverty and hunger.
Among them is five-year-old Amy Kho, who joined the event with her mother Jacklyn Lim and two older brothers Alvin, seven, and Alex, nine.
Asked if she was excited to be taking part, Amy smiled and nodded.
30-Hour Famine: Amy, the youngest participant, with her mother Jacklyn. Her mother said the family decided to take part in the 30-Hour Famine as she felt it would be good for them to experience hunger.
“I explained to them that there are many children in the world who don’t have food and I wanted them know what it feels like,” she said.
The participants began fasting from noon yesterday and will end it at 6pm today. The event was organised by World Vision Malaysia.
Children under 12 will fast for eight hours.
The event also raised RM110,300 for the Kuching Autistic Association and other groups including World Vision Hope Fund.
Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan, who opened the event at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre here, said most Malaysians tended to overeat.
“Very few of us go hungry just because we don’t have anything to eat. This event will give us a feel of what it is like to have nothing to eat and to have no hope,” he said.
World Vision Malaysia board member Catherine Choong said this was the first time such an event was held in Kuching.
We should not eat more food but we could to eat enough food. Malaysia isn't like some countries of Africa but whether Malaysia will changed like some poor countries of Africa next time?.
